Do High Definition Movies On My Dvr Take Up More Space Than Standard Definition Movies?

Postby Bitten » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:59 am

When I save on my Comcast DVR, it doesn't say how much space is taken up by each program. Some programs I want in HD and would save in HD anyway; others, I don't care, and don't want to clog up my DVR by saving an unnecessarily large file. The question is, though, does an HD version of a show take up more filespace than the analog-derived standard definition file.(Sounds obvious that it does, but I can't confirm this.)

You'll find that HD recordings take up a lot more space on your DVR than standard recordings. For example, a TiVo HD DVR advertises that it can hold up to 180 hours of standard recordings, but only 20 hours of high definition recordings.

Yes it does, it is a much higher resolution picture so it will take up a lot more space. According to the link in the source 1 hour of SD video takes 1gig of space, 1 hour of HD video takes 4gigs. This can vary slightly depending on what exactly is being recorded, but that is a rough estimate.

They take quite a bit more space They are incredibly higher resolution, so they take up a LOT more space than SD shows. Generally, an HD show will take around 4x the space on the DVR(subject to compression types, etc). joshbadams 73 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment. Do High Definition Movies On My Dvr Take Up More Space Than Standard Definition Movies?

A cable guy told me that HD programs consume about four times the bandwidth of a normal program. I'm not sure that it translates directly to 4x the storage space on DVR. It probably depends on the DVR model, the cable company, and the compression used to record the program. It is safe to say that HD programs consume more space on the DVR than SD programs.   My HD DVR(Explorer 8300HD) shows the following info on the following info:   160GB hard driveAllows recording and storage of up to 90 hours of SD programming or 20 hours of HD programming.* * Specifications are subject to change without notice. * Recording hours depends on the programming source.   That would jive pretty well with what the cable guy said.

Do High Definition Movies On My Dvr Take Up More Space Than Standard Definition Movies?

Yes On my DVR(ViP 622 if i remember correctly) it lists how many HD hours and how many standard hours are left.  If I delete a 2 hour HD movie, it adds 2 hours to HD and like 4-6 hours on standard hours.
