Do I Need To Keep My Title With My Motorcycle? (and Other Legal Stuff)

Postby Benito » Fri Jan 10, 2014 6:40 am

I don't have a motorcycle however, but I am seeking to commence riding soon. I have some legality queries.-Like a vehicle, do I want to maintain my insurance and title on the motorcycle somehow? I don't really see places to store that stuff on a bike.-Do motorcycles need to have to go by means of emissions inspection every single year like automobiles? Or do I just require to get the tags renewed?-Any other legal stuff that I missed, can you explain? Thanks.

Insurance cards should be kept in the glove compartment(or where ever) in the car; I guess it's good to keep the card in your wallet for the motorcycle if there is no compartment which looks usable. As for emissions testing, call your local DMV since it'll vary by state. 58 months ago

Yeah, your title should be kept in a safe place, preferably a safe deposit box. Registration and insurance cards should be kept on your person, although you might have a place to store it on the bike somewhere. I had a small amount of storage space in the cover of the battery compartment. A lot of bikes have a lockable storage compartment under the seat, too.

Do I need to keep my title with my motorcycle? No. Keep that at home.> do I need to keep my insuranceFold that and keep it in your wallet. You need to show it when you're stopped. It doesn't have to be attached to your motorcycle.> and title on the motorcycle somehowTitle: No.Current registration document: fold that and keep it in your wallet. You need to show it when you're stopped. It doesn't have to be attached to your motorcycle.> Do motorcycles need to go through emissions inspection each year like cars?California: No. Your state may vary, but since California doesn't require it, I doubt your state will.> do I just need to get the tags renewed?California: Yes, every year. $$$. You need to have the current stickers on the license plate. Trust me, I've been pulled over twice for not having them. I've also been pulled over twice for riding on bald tires.I was also pulled over once for doing 90 mph on the 210 freeway, but that's not relevant to the current discussion... ...and finally, after I smashed up, a nice CHP officer told me to drag my motorcycle off the road. I guess that's not relevant either.

You keep your insurance card(or proof), your registration, and your license with you. I wouldn't leave it with the bike but put it in your jacket in a zip-lock baggie or your wallet. You don't want to leave you title with the bike as someone could steal it and sign it over to themselves and make it look like maybe you sold it to them and take possession of your motorcycle. I have seen nuttier things happen.   JayD 22 months ago
