As a Nevada insurance broker - being self employed does not mean that you do not need to carry workers compensation:

1) Certain licensing requirements - like contractors (electrical, plumbing, landscaping ete) the state of Nevada and the contractors board require you to obtain workers compensation in order to obtain the state license.

2) Be aware of some health insurance policys in Nevada - for example: Health Plan of Nevada (HPN) and Sierra Health Services have exclusions written into their Individual policys that state: If you are hurt while working on a "for-profit" basis the injury is excluded from coverage. In simple terms, it means that on the job accidents are not covered under their individual plans.

Insurance laws vary from state to state. For example, in New Mexico, contractors are required to carry Workers Compensation regardless of whether or not they have employees, but other types of businesses (i.e. restaurants & retail stores) are only required to carry it if they have three or more employees (which is defined to include owners). I would speak with your insurance agent regarding Nevada's laws. If you doubt what they have to say, call the insurance department or go on your State's Insurance Department website.

I hope this information helps!

It would likely depend on the amount of work done. But I donno. Usually up to a certain amount is considered a hobby.
