Do you have to be from a wealthy background to become a barrister/lawyer/solicitor?

Postby barend31 » Mon Oct 31, 2011 2:12 pm

Since I started secondary school i've been captivated by law and would absolutely love to pursue a career in it, but quite a few people say that unless I come from a wealthy family and have good family connections I wont be able to do it? I'm definitely capable of a law course but I come from a middle class background so is it possible or are my chances low?

certainly not! i think you will be more likely to succeed if you are "normal"
remember normal people need to hire lawyers, who are they more likely to hire? the more real you are, the better i think!
best of luck with your career!
btw - i am a university lecturer (my mum is a cleaning lady, and my dad a gardener)

Of course not. It's not the 80's anymore, people from all walks of life and studying Law at university and going on to great things. Perhaps if it were 30 or more years ago, when studying at university was rare for anyone from a working class family. But student finance has come a long way, and the more prestigious universities understand the importance of widening access to people from all different backgrounds.

Ignore the ignorant fools. If you are bright, competent and hard working you'll do fine!

After reading your question, one book's tittle popped in my mind: UGLY, from Constance Briscoe, you seriously want to have a look and tell those who told you such lies to read it as well. Your chances are extremely high. Whatever you set your mind to do, you will.

Absolutely not. All you need is a big capacity for working at studying and ability to stick at it. If you can't do that then it doesn't matter how much money daddy has. It can't be bought.

NO! My mum is a lawyer and she didn't come from a wealthy background. Wealth doesn't matter. It depends on your passion for the subject.

I hope you decide to pursue a career in Law!
