Do you have to be in NY to be a successful investment banker?

I am aware that Wall Street hosts a good majority of finance related careers, as well as corporate law. I was just curious whether that heavy presence of i-bankers is comparable to areas such as DC or Maryland, for example.

I don't know about DC but last week I read somewhere about some recent business school grads were offered investment banking jobs with firms in Chicago. Nothing from NYC.
