Do you use the word "company" when registering your business name?

Postby werner72 » Mon Apr 04, 2011 6:28 am

I am starting a skateboard business. for example say i want it to be called "Great Skateboard co." or "Great Skateboard Company."
When i register for an EIN number and Trademark do i have to include the word Company in the name as i did before in order to call it so, or is it implied already and my paper work can just say "Great Skateboard."

I would like it to have Co. at the end but i wasnt sure if it was necessary that i have to put that on the forms.

You would only include it if it's part of the name! "Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company" aka A&P used the word company in its name. "Acme Anvils" or "Acme Anvil Company" are two different companies.

When you register a trademark you have to "disclaim" portions that are generic, so you would obtain no additional protection from adding Company or "dot com" or Inc or LLC or the like. More to the point, your company name is NOT a trademark until you mark it on your goods. Just brand it GREATSKATES.
