The problem is that your "pink" plastic "Shift Interlock Latch" broke. It is NOT a problem with your Transmission.
Chrysler (Dodge) has a recall on this matter for 2005 - 2007 Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 equipped with a floor shifter. They claim to service your vehicle free of charge (parts and labor). When I called my dealership, they were aware of this problem and asked for my VIN. Turns out I didn't have a qualifying VIN number, even though my make, model and year are qualifying factors. I called Chrysler's recall center to find out why "my" car does not get the same offer. They said because of "where" it was made...even though it has the same faulty part...That doesn't seem right.
After much research, I found that there are hundreds of people having the same issue. There is an alloy type duplicate part that is being manufactured and sold for only $21. The dealership will make you pay for an entire new shifter that comes with the same faulty plastic part for around $175 plus labor. They don't sell just the part. I've gone to many of forums on this topic, and some will show you how to fix it yourself, but I'm not going to even try. I bought the part and will ask the dealership to put it in for me. Some have said that the dealership will put this part in for you and it takes less than an hour.
Here is a "how-to" link with photos for getting your shifter unstuck temporarily with a screw driver...be sure to read the very last post, as his idea is the easiest fix and is what worked for me...(a 43 year old Mom, lol): http://www.lxforums.com/board/f74/stuck-park-heres-quick-fix-get-you-going-227831/
The part is called a "shift interlock latch"...you can get it at rockauto dot com. It is a Dorman part # 924706.
One more thing...If your car falls under the same year, make and model for the recall K39, but are told that your car does not qualify because of "where" it was made, please send me an email. If there are enough petitioners, I can try to put together a petition to send to Chrysler's Corporate to encourage them to service "all" cars with this faulty part...and if that does not work, a class action law-suit might. People are paying on average $450 for this repair.
Chrysler should not get away with having the knowledge of this faulty part and not taking the responsibility to repair "every" Dodge / Chrysler that's been affected.
