There are lawyers that try conscientiously to be honest all of the time.
There are lawyers that are honest by choice only some of the time.
And there are lawyers that are as crooked as the worst of cons.
Just be aware that it is not what a lawyer says or writes in some document that proves he or she is honest but the cunningly omitted things they don't say or have not written that reveals their integrity.
Remember that lawyers are skilled with words and have learned to paint pretty pictures with words. They get you focused on what you can see and use it to keep your attention diverted away from what you cannot see and away from what may actually prove more important to you.
Lawyers that do this justify it to themselves by telling themselves that the courtroom is a contest. And they say it is necessary to be that way because the people who must defend themselves in a trial are that way. But does it really make sense to become like the thing you hate? If the people who are charged with being caretakers of our system lack integrity how can our system maintain integrity?
I do not care where you look for a lawyer, look at some of the cases he or she has handled and learn for yourself what his or her patterns of ethics reveal.
The problem is that this is more than most average people are capable of doing for themselves. And that is why so many unethical lawyers are able to continue licensed.
Being a lawyer does not automatically mean they have integrity. And many people prefer a crooked lawyer because they are less than reasonable in what they seek to win.
What a disgusting mess.
