Driving without insurance. What will happen to my car?

Postby reuben29 » Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:30 am

I was in a car accident where I hit another person. We were both fine. After the accident, the front of my car needed some things replaced and his bumper had a small crack and was falling off. The police officer took our licenses and proof of insurance for information purposes. I wasn't given a ticket.

However, my insurance company contacted me after the accident notifying my dad that the amount he paid for the insurance was returned to him a few months ago. (He was unaware until then because he did not see the letter until after the accident.) We're still not sure why the money was returned.

The guy must have tried to have my insurance pay for the damages because he contacted my dad saying he wanted to take me to court.

What will happen to my car? Will it be impounded? I live in Washington State.

I think this website might help, but I'm having a hard time understanding what they mean. http://public.findlaw.com/traffic-ticket-violation-law/state-traffic-law/washington-traffic-law.html

Please and thank you for answers!

Ok well seems like it is not your fault or Dads fault for that matter. You need to contact the insurance company and figure out why they returned money that our dad sent to them for insurance. I would tell them that this is there fault and not your for not having insurance, and if that guy takes you guys to court then you need to take the insurance company to court. Only reason i say that is because..it clearly shows that you did have insurance, it also shows that there was a payment for the insurance but the insurance company returned it. so that is enough to justify that not having insurance is on the insurance company.

You need to contact the insurance company and find out why your payment was returned. If it was for a legitimate reason, then you didn't have insurance and you are responsible for damages yourself (both for your car and the other car, if you are found to be at fault).

If you are under 18, Your Dad will be sued for all of the damages. The last thing you should be worried about now is if your car will be taken from you. You and Dad have much, much more serious things to be concerned about.

I would definitely compare different company rates, the quotes for me were totally different for each company. http://www.autoinsuranceestimate.info/ will give you rates from different companies.

Driving without insurance is a serious offense that poses significant consequences. In addition to being liable for damages caused by an accident, you can also be ticketed, fined, lose your driver’s license and, in some states, your car can be impounded.
Getting insured is one of the best things you can do to make sure all is not lost when finding yourself in the middle of predicament.
Driving without insurance may also cause lead to having your vehicle impounded. Some cities such as Texas, are known to do this. You would usually have to pay considerable fees and produce proof of insurance to get your vehicle back, not to mention having to pay the extra fees for impounding your car which normally charges you for everyday your car is impounded.

no your car will not be impounded, but you cannot drive it until you get insurance ok? and the person needs to get his car fixed so that needs to be paid asap. Since you had no insurance it looks like you and your dad need to work something out with the owner of the other car. You need to get insurance as soon as possible, this will insure that your car is not impounded. It sucks when insurance companies do this kind of stuff, but that does not matter now. at least you are aware of the problem, and can get insurance. does not sound like anyone was injured, so lets hope it stays that way, hang in there, sometimes stuff happens that cannot be helped. so be good and stay out of trouble.

Not having insurance get get you a ticket and a fine, similar to any traffic ticket.

The owner of the car is liable for damages caused by anyone driving the car. The other driver is insured, and as part of that insurance has something called uninsured driver coverage. If the owner of the car you were driving did not have valid insurance, you are an uninsured driver.

To make an uninsured motorist claim, the other driver has to first sue you, and then his insurance will pay an uninsured motorist claim. If you are a minor, your custodial parent will be legally responsible for any legal judgement against you. If you are 18 or older and you own the car, you will be responsible for the judgement, but if you don't have money, his uninsured motorist coverage will kick in. If your father owns the car, the judgement will be against him.
