Kristin-
There was a day when any drug conviction could be an automatic disqualification from military service. However, as more and more kids were found to be "experimenting" with marijuana, the military(and many other government agencies for that matter) have become much more "forgiving" when doing background investigations. In point-of-fact, even the FBI, DEA, ICE & ATF will allow applicants who have "experimented" with marijuana to join their ranks.
Consequently, I don't think 1 gram of marijuana at 18 yo will prohibit him from military service. However, the worst thing he can do is not be totally candid when asked if he has ever experimented with marijuana. He simply needs to say that he experimented with it when younger, but has since stopped all use.
