Employee's rights, weekend shifts, (England)?

Postby emilek17 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 4:42 am

I work night shifts at a nursing home and I've been working for 6 weekends straight (Saturday and Sunday). I heard by law the employee has the right to have 2 weekends off on a 4-5 weekly rota.
I don't mind working 2 or 3 weekends but 6 weekends is a bit too much, especially when other employee's are getting 7 weekends off straight. Seems a bit ironic to me. What shall I do and what are my rights?

May I just add that I'm not contracted to do certain days I do shift work, It's different for everybody every week, so there should be a rotation.

How many times are you going to ask this today?

THERE ARE NOT EMPLOYEE RIGHTS REGARDING WEEKEND WORK.

Hi I use to work all sorts of hours, my thoughts about your situation is the nursing home are not being fair with you. If I was you I would go and see your supervisor and explain in a nice manor that you would like some weekends off now and again. Hope it works for you .Good luck.

As my wife used to work in a care home, I know that the usual practice would be to share the shifts out as fiarly as possible (weekends and holiday periods especially) unless people had been taken on with anunderstanding that they could only work certain shifts due to other responsibilities. It may be that they are having difficulties covering weekends, and give them to you because you seem willing to do them and haven't complained. Have a word with the management first, to see if you can sort something out by mutual agreement. There aren't actually any laws about this - especially for jobs which have to be covered 24/7 - but do have a look at your employment contract to see what it says.
