EMT- Basic Pay What should I do?

Postby mate » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:40 pm

I work for a service in West Texas and as a Basic I make $40 Per 24hr shift (which is ~ $1.67/hr) and make 7.25 per call basically. It comes out to about $1,100- $1,200 a month. I am also somehow not considered a full time employee and work well over 40 hrs/week. Is this a violation of labor or wage laws. If so what are they, if not any opinions on what to do are appreciated.

$40 x 30 is $1200 but you would have to be at the station every day and night. Not going to happen and if it does, I doubt if I would want you coming to the rescue of anyone I cared about.

No violation if your ambulance is considered volunteer.

But seriously? You didn't ask about being paid when they hired you?

Fully paid? What do the others make? Have you discussed this with your boss? Considering the many types of arrangements and exemptions EMS can have, they may be fully compliant with the law. You need to read what you signed for an employment contract.

In Texas you can become a Paramedic in less than 6 months. But maybe you should do a little research first about the profession and the companies you can workk for.

JoJo is right.

EMT-Bs get crapped on a little because it doesn't require a lot of know how.

I suggest getting higher certifications so they will pay your more and consider you a full time employee. Like go get your EMT- I or better yet become a paramedic.

It sounds like you work for a volunteer ambulance service. If that is the case you are lucky to get any money since many are EMTs for free.
