Excessive traffic tricket fine (california)?

Postby menw » Sun Jul 29, 2012 3:49 pm

I got caught going 84 on the freeway. It was my first days of work and punctuality is very important to me. I got sloppy and also forgot to take my wallet and my updated insurance form. I got 3 violations in total, but two of them are fix-it ticket. This is my fist traffic violation and they are charging me $1473.00 and $415.00 if I want to attend traffic school. I am 19 years old and there is no way I can afford to pay such a massive amount with my income from a part time job; especially when I also have to pay for school, gas and other essential things.

Yes it's excessive but you will have to pay one way or the other.
Lesson learned.

Driving without a license and without insurance are very expensive tickets, since the assumption is that you are not licensed and do not have insurance.

Once you show evidence that you had a valid license and valid insurance, they will be dismissed. If you were not licensed or did not have valid insurance at the time of the tickets, they will not be dismissed.

The fine for that speed is $360. Yes, traffic school costs more, but it keeps it off your record for insurance purposes.

Telling the judge that you were trying to be punctual and that's why you were speeding will amuse him/her, nothing more. You might be able to work out a payment plan, or your district may offer community service. Couldn't hurt to ask.

You appear in court and explain to Judge you cannot afford the fines. Judge will sentence you to community hours instead
For future reference it is a violation to address another user by name. Suggest you read the community guidelines

If the speed limit was 55 you were 29 over, making it reckless driving, of it was 65 then you were 19 over still a big fine. The reckless driving can result in a license suspension. I'd be happy with a big fine if I were you. Payments work as long as you make the arrangements and keep them up.
