First speeding ticket in Maryland? Went over 10 mph for sure.?

Postby tupac » Tue Jul 10, 2012 2:22 pm

It was July 4, the time was past 12 in the morning, and my friend was tipsy so I was driving the car because I was completely sober. But on the specific street I was on, there are 3 cameras and I know where all of them are so I was very alert. But knowing there are none on the other end of the street, I was speeding for sure but I don't remember how fast I was going but I feel like I was probably going between 45-55 mph and the speed limit there is 30. My friends and family told me it will not be more than $100 but I'm scared it might be more and I'm dying to know the consequences. I'm a safe driver, I've never gotten pulled over or any tickets since I've had my license; which has been a year and 4 months and because we were the ONLY ONES on that road, I sped a little more...

Do you think my friend will have to go to court? She's 19 years old and doesn't have a problem with paying the ticket but I'm afraid something more might happen. She thinks that it will only be a ticket she will deal with but after researching, it says that she might have to go to court or something?!

Please be thoughtful with your answers, I'm really worried and feel terrible for my friend but she is okay with it because she had no idea about the camera either and she would've sped also because... well EVERYONE who drives on that road usually goes 50 mph.

I believe it will be 100 bucks.

Your friend might have to go traffic school too.

I use gototrafficschool.com.

If you need referral use code: X2K-7CF-4F5 to save 2bucks off the course.

19bucks only. Plus 15 if the county you got your ticket from requires verification.

For the final exam answers search how to pass oline traffic school test

It is not clear from your question if you were pulled over by a police officer, or were caught by a speed camera. I will describe both situations.

Speed Camera:
Camera's only trip if you are going 12 mph over the posted limit, which it sounds like you did. The fine is a flat $40, no points, no record or insurance increase. This is because they are "civil offenses" and therefore do not count as a conviction for purposes of driving records or car insurance.
The ticket is against the car's owner only. The owner can pay the ticket by mail, contest it in court, or fill out a sworn statement that identifies who was driving the car, thus shifting the ticket to them instead.

Pulled over by Police Officer:
The charge is defined as "Exceeding posted speed limit by 10 to19 mph." The punishment is fixed by Maryland law at $90 and 2 points against your license, BUT only if you are convicted. Your car insurance company is informed upon conviction, which will cause them to hike up your fees.
You may handle it one of three ways: Plead guilty by mail and pay the fixed fine, request a waiver hearing and plead guilty with explanation, or request a trial.
