W.H.

So, today I took a firearms class in order to renew one of my concealed carry licenses. The instructor was a guy of about 35 or so who had a prosthetic leg courtesy of an IED in Afghanistan. He's a very cool guy and as the class was small we were all chatting quite a bit.

The instructor reveals that he volunteers lots of time for the Wounded Warrior Project and often goes to the VA hospital to visit and encourage the guys coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan with parts missing.

One of the other students asked him what kind of stuff they do, and his *FIRST* answer was "The biggest thing we do is to help the guys open a bank account that is in their name only." When asked why by the same student, he said "Well, when these guys come back injured they get a huge chunk of tax free money. I got $125K for my leg. Anyway, over HALF these guys wives empty the account and file for divorce unless we help them to put it in a secure account."

I have to admit, this shocked even me

I think we need a law that protects veterans benefits,, agree?

Agreed! I've seen this happen twice. & I really can't believe these women would do this. It's wrong. But yes, there should be a law protecting the veterans.

If that is what wives of returning vets are doing then these women need to be hunted.

Hi hobgoblin :) I agree with you. I think our laws are reflecting a time when women couldn't support themselves because they only worked in the home. A woman has no moral claim to that kind of money, unless she too was injured in war of course.

The reason this kind of thing happens is because we have forgotten the idea of freedom. No, we don't need *more* laws to fix it. We need *less* laws to fix it. Besides, why should veterans have this special privilege? Why shouldn't all men be protected from having their bank account cleaned out by wives filing for divorce?

Since it would take political action to pass the new law, why not political action to get rid of the law that's causing the problem instead? The government should not be in the business of registering and regulating people's sexual relationships in the first place. Both the marriage and divorce laws should be repealed. *If and only if* a man has entered into a contract to share his money with a woman, then and only should she have aright to claim, whether or not she is his wife.

The onus should be on her to prove a right to it, not on him to protect it by passing even more friggen laws.

Yes certainly do need a law to protect a man in that situation. And not of course only in that situation. A man who has fought for his country and been injured in this way needs a lot of help, financially and otherwise. I truly do not know how a woman could even touch a penny of it, knowing the source makes it even more despicable. That money is his, and his alone. It should be protected and I hope it can be.
