In all of Canada it is basically illegal for an individual to keep/own a handgun.
You can be a member of a shooting club, who can own their guns, and use their weapons at a range or competition.
A long gun can be individually owned after you get a special license. You must state why it is needed, like you are a rancher and have to shoot varmints attacking you cattle. Self defense is not a valid reason.
Did you know that cops in Canada are not allowed to carry a gun off duty?
