The main reason people choose to subscribe to any particular religion is because they are afraid of death. The idea that death is the end of your life and there is nothing else is very scary and harder for some to grasp than the idea of a mystical deity. When you are at a relatives funeral and a small child looks up at you and asks "is mommy in heaven?" would you find it easier to say "yes she is up in heaven and very happy" or to respond "mommy is dead and gone and there is no spirit world, she's just dead" So I think that religion was largely created as a way to cope with these types of questions and thousands of years ago when science itself was a new idea that most people did not know about it was very easy to spread religious beliefs.
