How do I find out who is living at and renting MY house at a particular address?

Postby berwin » Thu Mar 22, 2012 9:01 am

A relative is renting out my COMPLETELY furnished house to someone in another state very far from mine, and I can't find out who the renters are and who is living there with them. He won't say! Due to my age and health and lack of being able to travel such a long distance, I couldn't even find out on the Search place where one can enter a person's address to find who is in my home. It just shows me as the owner and other relatives deceased with our correct ages or who once owned houses when they lived next door. I do not want my relative knowing I am searching for WHO is in my house. I have no plans of confronting anyone. I just want this information to know and what these renters are all about. I'd do a paid Search online if it's accurate and not found out by the renters and as long as it's not costly. I may or may not want to collect some of this rent. He claims he's fixing it up from much needed repairs but he hasn't replaced the furnace with a used one for $300-400 he said he could get from a friend nor had painted the much needed outside for over 5 years. Maybe the house was painted about 15 years ago or so. I'd hope if the person renting it, if they are not paying rent but replacing the old furnace with a newer used one and will be painting it instead themselves. I was there 2 years ago before he got this renter. The relative had someone living there 5 years ago with my signing papers of a lease and his being my property manager by email for it to be rented out and everything about that person; that first renter NEVER paid any rent or deposit I was told and left it a mess after eviction...he left the state after my relative sent him an eviction 7 months later. My relative said one of his friends had broken up with his girlfriend who were cleaning up the first renters mess; the guy was just staying there temporarily. I was able to go up 2 years ago calling my relative for keys to the house on my cell phone when I was 20 miles away. Then he admitted to me that his guy friend who broke up with his girlfriend decided to stay and was going to rent it. It was embarrassing for me and the young man "staying there" to meet and be sharing my house! I wondered what people were thinking seeing me and this stranger staying there a few days. He went back with his girlfriend as he realized it was uncomfortable, and we both were tricked. I just knew his first name. There are new renters there (2nd renters) with the guy's pre-teen daughter for almost a year now. I'm sure they probably have cell phones, but I don't know their names or numbers to do a reverse look up of numbers or a facebook check if the daughter has an account. I don't want any police involved. This relative could probably do damage or remove things from my furnished home if I did anything drastic. Then I'd have no one to look after the house or keep pipes from freezing in the winter months and he'd shut off the water; he placed the water in his own name! He believes he is going to inherit this home along with a couple of others to rent out or I am going to give him the house for free!. The land and house are worth about $45,000 unfurnished. I have no place to put the furniture or any money to pay for its storage. It would cost me $1000 to go up there staying in a hotel and car rental with gas and food. The relative...is my brother's youngest son in his 40's who is in serious health and may or not have an operation to live or be a vegetable. I'm being kept away from my brother by his wife and his grown sons as he has lots of money (like they do) they want from my brother's death which could be at any time. My sister-in-law has always been this nasty and manipulative towards my dad, mom, and I when he met and married her 46 years ago. PLEASE ADVISE! I can't get an attorney due to this entire situation.

If the house was thrashed, your furniture may also have been trashed. Perhaps a professional property manager can help you. Obviously your relative is not qualified to manage a property. Perhaps you are not qualified either. A property manager would advertise your property, evaluate prospective tenants, do a background check on the tenants, and have them sign a written lease, collect rents and give you a periodic report on income and expenses.. He would not rent to friends and acquaintances. Probably the property is now being rented on a verbal lease. Such people are easy to get rid of. Because of your emotional ties to your brother, you are not conducting your affairs on a good business basis.
