How do I go about filing a Defamation of Character in New York..?

My ex-mother in law has accussed me of sleeping with someone else for the past 3 yrs.. she has told her son and everyone else in my mother's neighbor. My mother can not go any where because everyone tells her what this women has said of me.. Can I actually file a complaint against her.

Long story short, you need actual damages for a sucessful suit.

No one is preventing your mother from going anywhere. If she chooses to pay attention to remarks and to let that limit her activities, that is her choice.

Just ignore this woman. Your actions will speak louder than her words.
