How long can the bank hold a payroll check by law?

My girlfriend works for a well known insurance company who has a location in St. Louis,Mo. The bank the corporate office uses is in Florida. She tried to open an account with a payroll check at Bank of America, they told her 7-10 business its now been a month. She's been calling the bank, been going to the bank, and still haven't released the funds. It shows a balance but she can't touch it. They say there are "no issues".What can be done?

That is way off somewhere ESPECIALLY for payroll checks.
Does she have direct deposit NOW?
I would be on BofA's front steps every morning til they paid me to leave.

Usually, they will let you have a small amount of the check the first day, and they have to release the rest within at least the next 10 business days.

Something is very odd.

20 business days is the maximum under bank regulations. But if they have held the deposit this long there is something you are not telling us.

Was she on Chex?
