How many feet away do you have to be from a house to shoot a gun?

I live in Manorville, NY and i have a woodchuck infestation; I wanted to know what the law was about shooting a gun on your own property or what type of gun is legal to shoot. I have a 12 gauge shotgun, and a .22 Rifle. Are either one of those guns legal to shoot?

I would recommend that you contact your local law enforcement agency and find out from them before you get your butt locked up.
