How much should I change to lease my horse out?

Postby vohkinne » Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:16 pm

15.1, TB, 7 yr old. Super jumper, could do an okay dressage test with a rider who wants to work on her dressage for eventing, but ideally she is a show jumper as she is so careful and never knocks poles.
I don't have the time to mess around selling her at the moment and have had a few people ask to lease her.
She is very bold and jumps 1.15m at the moment.
I would be happy for them to take her off the property, sign a lease contract and they can have first right of refusal on a decided price after 6 months of lease.
She is very easy to handle on the ground in every way and isn't marey but when she is out of work and is taken out can be hot for the first 15 minutes or so once you get on. She would need a rider who is experienced, has an independent seat and knows when to be gentle and firm as she is a sweet pony and I wouldn't want to see her be wrecked.

Thanks! Any answer would be appreciated!

The price you charge is unimportant, except that it might select the kind of person you would want. I think you should aim for two things. First, a contract that covers all aspects of the lease correctly, so you avoid difficulties over things that were not mentioned or discussed. Second, a person so trustworthy that you feel your horse is in a good place and the contract is almost superfluous.

Here's an example of a bad leasing situation: We leased to someone who kept the horse at a barn that had The Carrot Lady. This person, who may or may not have owned a horse at the barn, would come and hand-feed carrots to all the horses, every day. Our well-mannered mare quickly turned into a nipper. Hand near her face? "Where's My Carrot? CHOMP."

100 to 200 a month or you should talk to the people asking to lease her and negotiate.

Nothing less than $800 a month. This will ensure that no poor people who don't deserve to ride horses sneak into the system. It will keep out a lot of riff-raff.

Dear Lord Donald Farnsworth:
go fck yourself, you worthless son of a btch. excuse me for not being rich and yet being one of the best riders at my barn. you can go rot in a cave.

@asker, sorry, that just made me really fcking angry. now, for the question.
FIRST. you want to get a contract that covers ALL aspects of the lease. preparing for the worst, if they injure your horse, you have to list the bills and damage payments they have to cover. if they KILL your horse (hard to hear, i know, but PREPARING FOR THE WORST), be sure to list everything that they have to provide for you.
the contract has to cover what the leaser's going to pay (vet, farrier, feed?) and on top of that the lease per month.
if they're leasing off-property, view their property first and put on the contract the guidelines you want them to follow to take care of your horse.
it really depends on what the person who's leasing wants to be responsible of. if they're boarding your horse, feeding, grooming, paying for vet bills and farrier, then nothing more than $75 a month taking your horse into account.
however, if they're just paying for board, then maybe $140-ish. depends on what they agree on.
if the horse is going to be kept at your place and they're going to use YOUR land for riding, if they pay for vet bills and farrier, like $120-130.
If they're not paying for anything BUT riding, like $175.
