We have lived in this house for 10 years. My eight-person family has A LOT of stuff, so you would imagine how much pain and effort it would be to move - especially in only 45 days!!!! My landlord has decided all of a sudden that she wants to move out of her house and move into our house! She sold her house already and plans to move in, and gave us 45 days to find a new home and pack everything. We have been working extremely hard to make the deadline, without the help of moving men and five members of the family unable to help due to health conditions, age, and various other reasons. We want to know if it was actually legal for her to make us move out with 45 days notice. The contract we signed with her says she can, but I also know that if the law says otherwise, the contract is void. In other words, the law supersedes everything. Trouble is, I don't know the law.
So, what does North Carolina law say? How much notice does a landlord need to give a tenant to move out?
By the way, we've always paid our monthly rent on time, and pretty much complied with all the contract rules.
