That said, you can still use your basement but with certain precautions. First off, a respirator rated for asbestos is a must until you're positive the area is free of particles. Now that's gonna be a time consuming task but, if a company qualified in asbestos abatement did the removal, the area should be pretty clean already -that's what they get paid for. Considering how long ago that you had the home inspection, the inspector couldn't be held libel. And considering how asbestos wasn't such a big concern back in 1982, it probably wasn't something he even looked for. But even if he did, asbestos, if covered up and not exposed, isn't a threat. An example is asbestos floor tiles. Left alone, they're no big deal but once you start pulling them up, they create dust and therefore an environmental problem.

As long as outer covering of the asbestos is in place is fairly safe, if not then the fibers can get in to the air.  If the fibers are loose, you should not be in the house.  A professional asbestos abatement company with have to come in and seal up the affected parts of the house and clean them up.  I would err on the side of caution and leave at least until the tests are complete.  They will tell you whether you can remain in the unaffected parts of your home. Asbestos is nasty, you need to listen to professionals about it, that is the best advice I can give you.

Even a single thread of asbestos can cause future problems. That said, you can still use your basement but with certain precautions. First off, a respirator rated for asbestos is a must until you're positive the area is free of particles. Based on my extensive experience as a Discovery and H&G Channel watcher...
