How would you handle this?

Postby lintun » Tue Apr 05, 2011 4:25 am

I Live In an Apartment Complex. EVERY SINGLE DAY this Black Guy,whom is a Pastor, and works in the Rental office as a Maintenance Guy, wants to talk to My son. I am NOT a RACIST,but I Know that this Guy used to be a BIG TIME drug user and seller. My Son Is Vulnerable, and Looking For ways To Make Money. I DO NOT want my son talking To This Guy! I don't care if He SUPPOSEDLY gave His Life To God Or Not! When I confonted Him,He Labeled Me as A racist, and said That He Is Just Trying To be a Nice Guy! I Told The Apartment Manager,Whom Is Black, and Took his Side. She Said, " We are A Family Oriented Community Here!" I don't want People discriminating against anyone here because None Of Us Are perfect! My Family is On Section 8,and We are in a 1 year Lease. Nice Property,BUT after 2 months of moving in,management changed. So Now according To My Landlord, I Must Be Nice to ALL tenants here. Word has Gotten around that I am Racist, which I am NOT! I told Her that as a Fathere an Adult,I should Make eecisions For Myself whom My Children associate with. She says, "Yes,BUT If You are Rude to Staff Then You are The problem, and I will start The Eviction Process." So When Our Lese Is Up,we are So outta There. BUT, Isn't this type of activity ILLEGAL,on Her (The Management's Part) ?

It's all fine and well with your situation and what people think. Who really cares? You are the MOM. And what you says goes. That's it. Have a good sit down with your son and tell him you want him to have nothing to do with that guy. Tell your son that you need to know every time he approaches him. Eff the manager and every one else. I would be tempted to go the Police department and make it known that this guy needs to steer clear of your son.

Also, just a thought. Section 8 is very strict. You aren't supposed to be able to benefit from it if you have past criminal charges. I would look into that. That would be an easy way to get rid of him.

Yes, it is illegal for an apartment complex to evict you because they don't like you. Unless there is something printed on your lease about specific behaviors, and they can prove those behaviors in court, they are not allowed to evict you. However, they also know you are on section 8 and probably do not have the funds to fight them in court. Unfortunately, people prey on you when you are in a rough spot and, knowing you can't fight them, they might just go through with the eviction anyway with the idea "what are you going to do about it?"

Just lay low, be civil to everyone, have good open communication with your son so that he will let you know if this man is actually approaching him about drugs, and otherwise, don't judge without knowing facts. It's a good parent who looks out for his kids, but everyone deserves a chance. If you don't see any activity to suggest that the man is still dealing drugs, then cautiously assume he's now clean. Just keep a good eye out.

Judging this man isn't illegal, and isn't grounds for eviction, but it does say a lot about you. Again, keep a wide smile, and even wider eyes. If there's anything illegal going on, it will come to light on its own. And if you truly have evidence or reason for suspicion that this particular gentleman is dealing/doing drugs, then call the police....why would you take such a serious accusation (if it's warranted) to anyone else?
