I did well on my interview but didn't get the job?!?

Postby lazaro94 » Thu Jul 26, 2012 12:02 am

I had an interview last Friday with a big bank at 1 of the corporate buildings in the city and I dressed properly, I spoke clearly, with confidence and thoroughly, my answers were nformative yet down to the point and qualifications seemed like the right fit. However, I got a call back today from 1 of the hiring managers who interviewed me and he said unfortunately I did not get the job because there were other candidates with slightly more qualifications he did say that they felt I was a great fit with the company, that the hiring managers really liked me, that they would let me know of any future opportunities and that they feel I would be a great fit with the company in the future...I said thank you for interviewing me and thank you for the opportunity and he said talk to you soon and hung up.

I have a drive to keep trying and to excel so failure doesn't bode well with me but only makes me stronger, I am still going to keep trying to look for bigger and better opportunities but do you think the manager meant what he said or do companies and employers just say that to avoid a non-awkward convo with the person they just rejected as a potential hire...I don't want to wait for them I can tell you that much.

At the same time I am frustrated because I'm a university law and business student, I have over 6+yrs of customer service, I am friendly, outgoing, honest, calm, confident, competitive, driven and to have applied for over 350 jobs in the past year really annoys me to! Now there's another opportunity and my friend who works for the same company told me to apply for a different but easier position, I'm not sure if I should apply for a different position for the same company at the same location...should I?

When there is 1 opening (for example) and there are 5 perfect fits (people) for that opening, 4 of those perfect fits won't get the position. Unfortunately, you were apparently one of those four. They probably say the nice things because they don't want to burn their bridges should the one they chose fails to work out for some unknown reason that didn't appear during the interview. If that person doesn't work out, they don't want to eat crow when they call you and make you an offer.

The professional way you handled the rejection will probably leave them with the thought that might keep you near the top of their list of potential hires for a later position. Most rejections are handled by letters to the applicant. You received a phone call. I really don't know if that means anything, positive or negative.

Sure, apply. If you get the easier position, that will be, as the saying goes, a stepping stone to the position you may have wanted. At least your foot is in the door.

It's up to the company to hire the best, and it's up to you to be the best.

A lot of times it is a hard choice to make between applicants. Your interview may have went good, but there was someone else that had a great interview. There is only 1 job and tons of people applied for it.
If they called you to tell you that you didn't receive it, then they must have liked you, because that is a lot more work than necessary to notify an applicant versus sending a letter or email.
There are a few people that may always be good but someone always a little better for a position. There is 1 person that has interviewed with our company 3 times and is always a 2nd choice. He does really well, but unfortunately someone is always a step ahead.
Don't give up, you'll find something. You should for sure apply for the other position, it shows them you are still interested in the company and if they really liked you before then you'll be a step ahead of others
