I hate my engineering major, how do I pursue a career in business?

Postby adalwine » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:16 am

I'm currently a junior, majored in electrical engineering! However, after doing a few internships in my field, I have just realized that I hate it. I also hate being in an office coding all day long. I have no passion for my field, and I don't like ANY of my classes. I still get good grades (after study for many many hours), but I have no passion or motivation. I have minored in business and after taking a few of the classes, I really enjoy them.

I am a social and confident person and I like communication. After a few weeks of research I found out that I could go into consulting instead. I got an interview with Deloitte, but never heard back. I think that my lack of knowledge in business will never allow me to climb the ladder in the business field.

Overall, I basically never want to program for my job. I want to manage and communicate with customers. I feel lost in my major, and I just REGRET choosing it. I know it's too late to change it, and I honestly don't want to either. But I would love to get a job more related to business, and I just wanted to know, what are some actions I could be taking right now? How can I use my engineering major to enter a business career???

Please help me.

Degrees that are fun do not pay.
There are thousands of graduates out of business that can't find jobs.
Read any newspaper.
Engineering is in demand, and forecasted to be one of the most in demand degrees for the next 20 years. Yahoo Finance.
Everyone under the sun has a business degree, they are easy and fun
* Some top colleges offer degrees in Engineering Management

I did the same thing. I moved to Software Engineering and have been working in the field for 20+ years. Choose a smart move that will help you keep a lot of your credits. I suggest staying in engineering. Business in a very tough field now to get a job in, you will need to start with an MBA just to level the field between you and your competition.

Ignore the first answer. If you don't enjoy what you do, then will regret not taking another job/career path.

You can enter a company based on your engineering merits and perhaps switch departments after a while?

I dunno
