I have two questions about california labor laws?

Isn't there a law stating that you have to have at least 8 hours off in between each 8 hour shift. Also, I sometimes work 13 consecutive days but am told that because the pay period changes right in the middle that im not entitled to overtime. I work at a gas station.

No there is not a an 8 hour break limit after an 8 hour shift.

Overtime is based on the work week. The employer can set the work week to any seven day period they want.

I'd have to agree that an employer has that option as to "when" you work that 40 hour week.
Your employer is not required to pay you overtime unless you have worked over 40 hours in 1 week.
A good idea would be to call your states labor board and get the advice that you need from them.
