Don't do Bilba, whatever you do. Go with Rosie or some Elanor or some other girl hobbit name if you must.

I totally get the love for LOTR, but I still don't think you should straddle your kid with a name like Bilbo or Frodo, you could use a name from a more minor character (Beren, Pippin, Thorin, Faramir..Luthien, Rosie, Eowyn, etc) but I think that the best choice is to go with a different name all together. Why not name your son William and call him Bilbo as a nickname? or Alfred or Frederick or something and call him Frodo?

Deed poll's that way, Bilba. Off you go. I expect to see your username change in the next thirty seconds, too.

If you wouldn't use a naming style for yourself _even online_, don't use it for your child.

"How do I convince my family and hubby that this is the best name for the baby" Are you sure you aren't saying that it's the best name for YOU? You might like it, but he/she will get picked on.

If you are such fans of the book do you want it to end up that your child hates it because of his/her name?

For a girl Bilba is not from the book. If you want to be really authentic go with Eleanor, Estel, Luthian, Arwen, Arwyn, Rosie, Eowyn, Meriadoc (Mary for short), Lorien or something that she might actually like/not be made fun of for. Keep HER in mind not YOU.
For a boy is Bilbo the role model you want? (or Frodo for that matter). They both failed if it wasn't for Sam it would have ended quite differently. What about names like Samwise (Sam for short) or Rohan. Those at least are half normal.

If you are determined to name your child after Bilbo/Frodo use a normal name for the first name and give him two middle names Bilbo/Frodo Baggins? (eg. Ethan Bilbo Baggins Smithy - Felicity Bilba Baggins Smithy)

Another option (and I think the best) is to give him a completely normal name with the second middle name being Bilbo or Frodo (eg. Benjamin Ethan Bilbo Smithy - Felicity Clare Bilba Smithy) so you can get what you want out of it and if he hates it he doesn't have to tell anyone his second middle name :) He won't be picked on for it and you will have the satisfaction of naming your son/daughter after your favorite character.

I agree with the grandparents. Pick a better name! THis is something your child will carry through life. It isn't a game or a joke.

I answer this sincerely, as a serious Tolkien geek, who is known as ioreth in many circles and proudly wears that knick-moniker: You could not impose YOUR own ego in a WORSE place or way!! This poor child will HATE you for it...even if everyone in the world knew the stories and got the noble part of it, there would still be endless hours of taunting "Dildo Bugger" etc...you might as well name them Vibrator or @ss-plug or Clitoria or ...... yeesh, woman!! This baby-making thing requires all thoughts to be for the best interest of the child, not how cool you think things may look or sound.
Life is bad enough these days for kids especially in public school with the bullying et al. There are so many better names in the books that would be socially less harrowing for them to live with. Especially for a girl (I know 4 Arwens), Eowyn, Elanor, Rosie, ioreth - pronounced YOReth, is an ancient Welsh male name from way back.
Bilbo will still be your favourite character if you name the child something else.....Sam, Peregrin, Bergil, gawd, ANYthing that doesn't rhyme with a sex toy for pity's sake!!! Name your DOG or CAT Bilbo!! Honour your child with a name they can wear proudly.
