I want to name my baby Bilbo?

Postby spengler » Wed Dec 21, 2011 8:49 am

I'm having a baby in four months and I really want to name it (me and my hubby have decided to not find out the gender) after my favorite character in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. If it's a boy his name will be Bilbo, if a girl her name will be Bilba. The middle name will be Baggins and the last name is Smithy.

The only problem is that my husband is totally against the name -he thinks we should name the baby Frodo (with the same middle name) And my parents and parents in law are ranting and raving about how ridiculous they think I am being (ironically, this is one of the few times they have agreed).

What should I do? How do I convince my family and hubby that this is the best name for the baby?

Your husband is right. Bilbo is a very silly name and your son will be made fun of. I don't like Frodo at all, but I think even that's better. Can you imagine if that was your name? Why don't you try using Bilba as your name at Starbucks or the next time you go out to eat and see what it's like to really have the name.

What about naming the kid after Tolkien himself instead? His real name is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. I think Reuel is unusual enough while still being serious, unlike Bilbo.

Are you insane?! You can't name a baby boy/girl like that! Don't you think is kind of cruel? Kids can be mean and with a name like these becomes so much easier to make fun of your child. Frodo/Bilbo(a) can be a good name for a dog, not a person.

wow! are you trolling or are you actually serious? bilbo and frodo sound like names a circus clown might have, they are rediculous! your child will likely hate the name, i wont blame them! kids today are cruel, any kid with a name like bilbo, bilba, or frodo would be bullied out of any institution they dared go too. look very hard at these books, surely you can find a more normall name in them. go for normal names, like Bernard, Andrew, Charlotte, Annalese, Bianca, Violet, Liliana, Matthew, Shawn, Moses, anything but Bilbo, Bilba, or Frodo. poor kid! if i was him/her i would come up with a cute nickname and call myself that instead. if you love this baby, don't name them bilbo, bilba, or Frodo.

name him/her John or Joanna, after tolkein himself.
