And by lies I mean straight out slander so that would be defamation of character right?
What are chances you could actually sue and what would be the criteria? If several people were involved would you sue them separately?

Do people ever sue for that- everyday people?
Right now the only know damage done is a tarnished reputation.
All are adults involved.

This is about a friend. If it was me, I would ask the same but wonder if it's worth it to actually get a lawyer involved

In most slander cases you must prove actual harm (I.e. monetary harm, physical impact, serious mental anguish, etc...). There are a few exceptions where injury is presumed and need not be proven in court. These are slander against your business or profession, slander concerning a loathsome disease, imputation of a major crime, and deviant sexual misconduct

It's best if you let your friend manage his/her own business and for you to stay out of it. If they need any help, he/she knows to talk to a lawyer.

Get them to prove it beyond reasonable doubt.

It's called slander, and yes you can sue a person for harmful sayings against you that are unfounded.
Gossip and lies have caused some people to take their own lives.
Such was the case with a teenager here in the Midwest not long ago. She was on facebook and her mom was jealous of one of her friends, so the mom got a facebook account, according to the news reports, and started lying on the girl and calling her names.....long story short, girl killed herself, parents sued the grown immature woman who caused her death and this woman spent some time in jail.....but in my opinion, not enough time. She should have gotten life without parole.

In some ways we are going through slander. It is very hurtful but I can see who the "real enemy" is in our situation. I doubt if it is worth going to court over.

Due to a "trust", lots of money is going out to lawyers and like I said, I doubt that the truth and all of it will come out. I just know that the One Above knows the truth, and I have to let go of it, though we both are having difficulty with so much drama.

I'm sorry for who ever is involved in this ugliness and I hope they know that Perfect Justice will not prevail in this system.

Have a good week. :)
