If my x landlord threatern me with court?

for backrent he says i owe from a bedsit i moved into with no contract and only evidance i owe money is in his own personnal book he keeps which i never had to sign what is the law , i lived there for 2 years just paid cash moved out due to damp walls and bad roof leaks which i was told would get redone soon so i got the 1 bed bedit for 80 a week just moved out and landlord gave me a letter threatening with court and whats the law if i can only afford a few pound a week as i have big bills rent insurance living costs

If he can't prove it just ignore him, you don't have to prove that you don't owe something, which isn't even possible anyway. If it goes to court, turn up and say you don't owe him anything, then he has to prove you do.
