In the process of starting divorce. Wonder legal aid lawyer or pay a lawyer? ?

Postby arrigo » Thu Mar 22, 2012 8:01 am

I have had consulted a few lawyers on my rights and what they charge. Was planning on hiring one.
A few weeks ago I was told from one lawyer to go file and order of protection. Because of the treatment I have been going thru with him.. Before you even start the divorce. In filing that on my own the judge referred me to legal aid.. Which I know found out i qualify for free lawyer..
My question is legal aid lawyers just as good as a paid lawyer.. Will they help me get just the same a paid lawyer would do? To add I do have Vera house helping me.. Also the legal aid in my county (Onondaga ) in nys.. Now has a qualification to use them if there is abuse in the relationship..

Pay for your own lawyer. Why should the taxpayers pay for a problem you got yourself into? Free legal aid should only be for those who are accused and cannot afford to pay.

shelby, kids always have my compassion, so without much exploration and debates, I suggest (at the risk of being wrong, of course), that man doesn't become his own opposite within one night, unless it was marriage for bride's wealth (which is clearly was not), for a legal status (no idea), so-called "trap marriage", or mental illness. Abuse means many things for many people, and having no idea what kind of abuse we are talking about, the next step would be exploring what could have provoked it. It's not the same, as accepting an abuse. In other words - too many unknowns, but when children are involved, and alleged abuse doesn't involve them - a divorce must the the absolutely last resort.

If a lawyer suggested an order of protection, and it's rather a trick to obtain a full custody of children, think long and hard, because such order precludes any possibility of a contact between the two of you, and of settling the issue in the best interests of children you share. Good luck
