Is it illegal to be naked in the window of your own home?

Postby morcan » Sat Dec 17, 2011 1:05 am

Just as the title says. Can you stand in the window of your own home, completely naked and not violate the law?

Now, I'm sure I know the answer to this, but I need to clear this up with my family, whom I was debating this with. Some said it's fine, some said it wasn't. I said it had to be okay.

We weren't taking this too seriously, we thought it was a hilarious debate. While doing so, we came up with a whole bunch of hypothetical scenarios.

What if you're naked and you have to answer the door?

What if you walk into your front lawn in nothing but underwear?
- What if the underwear you had on was very transparent?

What if you had to run out of your house naked because of a fire?

But the main question here is: Can you stand in front of your window without clothes on?

If you can be seen from outside in the public area, sidewalk or road, yes it is illegal.
In the case of a fire, no, but you must cover up ASAP.
On the front lawn in only underwear? Ok, much like wearing a bikini, no problem.
Answering the door. Spare a though for the caller, (Might be a Jehovah's witness!) unless you know who it is, and want them to see you naked!

It all depends on where you live. In some US cities and States it would be illegal.

I live in the UK and frequently answer the door of my house naked. It's perfectly legal.

I think you can make it obvious like stand naked in front of your window while 15 people snap pictures. Its your house. You'll obviously get a knock on your door from a Police Officer, if your delibertly are trying to expose yourself to a bunch of losers looking at you complaining to Police instead of moving along.

No, I do it all the time, but don't be surprised if a kid comes along and shouts "YOU'RE NAKED!"

Indecent exposure is the deliberate exposure in public or in view of the general public by a person of a portion or portions of his or her body, in circumstances where the exposure is contrary to local moral or other standards of appropriate behavior. Indecent exposure laws vary in different countries. It ranges from including the genital areas, buttocks and female nipples. In some ultra-conservative jurisdictions the exposure of any part of the female body is considered indecent. Some countries do not have indecent exposure laws.
In most states of the United States, state law prohibits exposure of the genitals and/or the female nipples in a public place, while in other states simple nudity is legal, but evidence of intent to shock, arouse or offend other persons (lewd conduct) is evidence of prohibited conduct. For example, in most states, it is a criminal offense punishable by fines and/or imprisonment, and/or registered sex offender requirements and restrictions. Some states permit local governments to set local standards. Public nudity itself has not been a crime throughout California since a 2000 Appellate Court ruling, and prosecutions and convictions are unheard of, but arrests do still occur, though they also are unusual, and Vermont only prohibits "open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior" so many forms of public nudity are legal.
In many countries men's and women's bare buttocks are not legal in public area. However, while women's bare buttocks are considered sexually obscene, men's bare buttocks are merely considered rude.
Indecent exposure is defined as a crime in the United States Armed Forces by Article 120(n), Uniform Code of Military Justice. The changes to Article 120 became part of the Manual for Courts-Martial in the 2008 edition.

I think it depends. I think since its your own property, its technically legal, but exposing yourself in front of a minor is not.

So... it depends on your audience. ?

I would say you are allowed to be naked in your own home no matter what, legally.
