Is It Legal To Claim You Were A Cop?

I have a neighbor claims he use to b a police officer. I don't believe him. He steals & has been caught in so many lies. Is it against the law to say that you were a police officer ? How can you find out if his so called claim is true?

It's legal, until he uses that claim in an official way or for unlawful purpose.  I can claim to be an advisor to the President, unless I'm doing so to bilk someone or otherwise commit fraud.
