Is It "uncatholic" To Want To Go To A Mass That There Is No Singing?

Postby Moketoveto » Sat Jun 07, 2014 10:34 pm

According to the new texts / changes that will be part of the Mass on the first Sunday of Advent, there will be much more singing and different style of singing during the Mass. I am one who likes my Mass solemn and reverent. I just feel that music distracts my concentration of the Eucharist and my adoration to Christ.

I believe this is only a venial sin by definition;^) You should talk to your priest and make sure though if you're really concerned about it.Why would you ask here anyway? Because of the anonymity or for other reasons...just curious.   dougiedognabit 30 months ago

Everyone should attend the type of service that means the most to them. Growing up as a Catholic, we never sang . I guess that has changed. Ii really enjoy going to the Protestant churches and singing out those hymns. That is what makes my Sunday morning happy(should go more often).   pammyj 30 months ago

Not at all. Usually there are three or four masses during the day and one(sometimes the earliest) doesn?t have singing at all.   ChainofThought 30 months ago

ChairofThought is correct. There are choices of Masses to attend during the day. My Parish has what is called a "Family Mass" that to me has too much music of a more upbeat Prostestant sounding music. I never go to that one. There is a 7:45 sunday morning Mass that has no music at all. I go to that one once in a while if I can not make the saturday evening Mass that I like most.I happen to lean towards the saturday 5:00 Mass that has a small amount of singing with only a organ no guitars, flutes and tamborines like the Family Mass has.I am like you. I go to Mass to pray and don't like the distraction of constant singing. Let the Protestants do that! :)   LouLou 30 months ago

Is It "uncatholic" To Want To Go To A Mass That There Is No Singing?

I found when I was both in the Roman Catholic school(they think I'm still a member because I was baptized there as an oblivious infant) and in the Episcopal church that both denominations/religions(however you see that one) had strong "return to the roots" movements. The Roman Catholics were centered around going back to the Latin Mass while the management was moving towards a modern appeal(I once stood and listened to the local rock band play "Come on, people now, smile on your brother, everybody come together," etc. at the end of a Roman Catholic mass. I guess this is what you're objecting to. Considering it's not a Christian nor Catholic song, I don't blame you. But you're not going to get the management to change anything because they're modernizing on purpose, for their own reasons. They are leaving to you the task of MAKING the music part of your worship, on your own. Personally, I think there are worse things than this modern music, but I was "taught" the Roman Catholic hymns by a tone deaf lay teacher in parochial school(can't stand "Holy, Holy, Holy" to this day.)   danielpauldavis 30 months ago
