Is my school legally aloud to access my personal information on my personal computer?

Postby ezri » Sat Nov 19, 2011 6:17 am

I have recently been caught with Skype opened at school as a mistake, now the school wants to access my Skype chats to see if I actually did chat in class (which I did). The school says that they will confiscate my computer from me, but will the school actually aloud to do that? This is MY own computer that came with the entrance fee at this international school. Is the school actually aloud to take my computer? And access all my personal information? Or is there some law against it?

Yes, your school is definitely aloud to take your computer and not to mention to access your personal information. You can just refused their demand.

However, you didn't behave well during class and the teacher would be feel unrespected.

Mainly it all depends on your school rules. Ask specifically what rules you have broken.

A few things to consider:

* Most schools have it as a condition of attendance that teachers can seize unacceptable property if you bring it to school.

* Even if you paid the entrance fee and got the comupter from the school, it remains school property. If you bought the school from an independent company without the school being involved, then it is yours.

Simply keep the computer at home and if asked, say that you are not able to bring it in at this time.

I don't believe they can.

Its personal property, Much the same as your bag cant be searched and neither can you locker.

I would say no and if any teacher touches you to try to take it you will go directly to the police station to report the thief and assault. Tell them that if they want to view it they will need to have the police with a search warrant.

All that said, when in class stick to learning. There is more than enough time out of school for chat.
