Is patent leather real leather, and what are the pros and cons of having a patent leather purse?

I just got a Coach purse made of patent leather, tan in color. I really liked it but after I bought it, I realized it might not be real leather? Is it still as durable, and should I return it? What is the material of the Coach purses that are labeled with the C's that feel more cloth like?
