Is there any legal action my friend can take with her unique eviction situation?

Postby ashly » Sat Jul 28, 2012 1:31 am

My friend owed her apartment complex $1,000 in late rent. She was informed by the main office that she was going to be evicted. She asked the main office how much she had to pay to not be evicted and was told $800.
After borrowing money from a bunch of her friends she paid $800 to the apartment complex. A few days later the local office lady showed up at her door with the sheriff and informed her she was being evicted. When my friend said she had already paid $800, the local office lady said, "you owe $200 still." When my friend informed the office lady about the information she received from the main office (that $800 would prevent her from being evicted) the local office lady said that she was just doing what the main office told her to do (evict my friend).
Is there any legal action available to my friend, did the apartment complex violate any laws against their tenant in this situation or not?
Thanks in advance for the info.

She's probably screwed.

I expect she was handed this load of crap by some drone on the phone, and she probably has no idea what the name of the person she talked to was, even, and no way to substantiate she was ever told such a thing.

But yeah anything she could do to back up that claim would help, maybe.

There's nothing like a receipt, marked paid in full.
