LA Colleges? Pre-Vet? Swimming?

Postby ezri » Wed Jul 25, 2012 4:20 pm

I'm only a Sophomore in high school right now, but I'm still looking at colleges.
So I want to go to school in or near LA, CA.
I want to study Pre-Vet, Animal Behavior, or Equine Science...Something to do with Animals.
I would also like to study/take classes like Criminal Justice/Law, Drama/Theater/Acting/Media, Art, Psychology....
I want to be involved in sports, and I love swimming, so I would love it if that was offered.

I'm already looking at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.

LA Colleges? Pre-Vet? Swimming?

Starting at a community college is a serious handicap for veterinary school admission. Most veterinary school applicants spent all of their undergraduate career at a four-year college or university, and, even so, most of them were not admitted to any veterinary school.

You are best off studying biomedical engineering, biological engineering, chemical engineering or another field that will prepare you for a good career if you are not admitted to vet school.

Pre-vet is not a major. It is a career objective. Animal behavior and equine science are unusual majors and lead to very limited job markets.

You need to concentrate on sciences and not on the other useless fields you also mentioned.

Your question shows much less concentration on becoming a veterinarian than is necessary to succeed in that relatively low-paying but very competitive field.

Try to get into a CSU if you cannot get into a UC. Otherwise consider a career as a vet tech. I recall that Pierce has a good vet tech program. However, vet tech credits will not transfer to the bachelor's programs that are required for vet school admission.
