Landlord and tenants?

Postby chen12 » Sat Jul 28, 2012 2:36 pm

I have a problem with a woman that lives in a house where I rent a room. The room is an addition without electric boxes in the wall. So I get the power in this room by using extension cords from the kitchen. She unplugged me more than once and more than once I called the law. The Landlord doesn't do anything about it. So yesterday she done it again, but this time I am going to hold my rent in a different saving account until the Landlord correct the situation, either she leaves or her and her boyfriend leaves. Can I withold my rent until the situation is corrected? I live in Florida.

You cannot legally withhold rent for any reason until you go through the legal process and have a court order. You still have to pay the rent into a court-held escrow account.

Not for this. Your dispute is not with the landlord. Unless you live in some sort of mental health care facility the landlord is not involved with any of your personal disputes, they CAN'T get involved, so it is impossible to force them. You can not withhold the rent to force the landlord to do anything illegal.

I would be surprised if it is even legal for that woman to rent a room in that condition and I am surprised that anyone at all would want to live in a space under those conditions. Your beef is only with her and "her" land lord (not yours) is not going to mess with her as long as she pays the rent. Get along or get out.

"The room is an addition without electric boxes in the wall"

This is a violation of Building Codes. There must be 1 outlet every 6 feet on a wall.

This is an ILLEGAL rental arrangement.

She built an illegal addition and is using you to pay for it.

You can either fight it or move out and tell her to f*ck off.
