You might also check out the Estates, Wills & Probate - NY board. Questions posted there are answered by a NY attorney who has always been very helpful.

Sorry for the loss."how do I understand how much he owes out there"That could be easy or complicated based on whether he went a little business out of the home or a bigger business someplace else.Either method, you essentially begin by researching all his business records. It could become more complicated if his estate needs to be probated. You might publish some extra information concerning the business and the estate and we might have the ability to provide you some idea who you may change to."and are there any liens against our house."Liens against home are often documented in the County Recorder where The home is situated. Several Recorders have online searches readily available for registered documents. Here's a connect to a summary of Nyc's Recorders practices with area and telephone number. http://www.zanatec.com/new_york.htmlYou may choose yours then contact and see when they have an internet site for searching documents. If not, they might be in a position to assist you look for files about the telephone or when you visit their location.Feel liberated to post again if you've more questions.

I also am sorry for the loss. Jack is correct. You'll need probate advice in addition to bankruptcy advice. A small company is just a difficult issue to protect price for you personally. My spouse may be the estate attorney on the estate board, and I'm the bankruptcy attorney on this board. Clearly there are lots of details that need to be researched, and you actually need an attorney and/or accountant to complete it.
