Hi there. I'm hoping that this question will reach someone who has experience in government affairs, particularly working as a lobbyist. However, if you do not have such experience, I would still greatly appreciate any advice.
Anyway, I'm currently in high school, and after much searching for a career that I believe will fit me well, I've settled on being a lobbyist. Personally, the notion of being a corporate lobbyist is rather off-putting to me, but I would very much like to lobby for nonprofit organizations, particularly groups that advocate for human/LGBT rights. I've read that nonprofit lobbyist make less money, but that does not change my feelings. Anyway, while I'm very certain a career as a lobbyist is what I'm seeking, I'm not sure what steps to take to reach that goal. Of course, I will, at some point, have to intern with the offices of elected officials or other political organizations to begin building experience and contacts. That, I understand. What I'm not so sure about is what to study in college. What type of major should I pursue. From what I can tell, many prominent lobbyist have worked as lawyers at one point or another. I don't really want to work as a lawyer, but should I study law? Or should I study something along the lines of political sciences? Personally, I find the latter option more appealing, but I want more than anything to get an education that will prepare me for a career as a lobbyist. Also, I'm fairly certain that it would be in my best interest to pursue a Masters degree, but while I'm inquiring; am i right in making this assumption?
Sorry that I wrote so much. As you can see, I'm quite confused. Well, I thank all of you in advanced for any help you can provide. It is much appreciated.
