Major in Finance, still practice any law after law school?

Postby stein74 » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:32 pm

If you major in finance at your undergrad, then go to law school, would you be stuck in corporate law or tax law? Would you be able to do personal injury law or criminal law?

Major in Finance, still practice any law after law school?

Your undergrad major will not in any way pigeon-hole you into practicing a particular type of law. In fact, a finance degree should really set you apart from a lot of law school students, and make you more competitive for law firms.

Should you decide to start your own law practice — regardless of what type of law you practice — a business degree will help you a lot.

Good luck!

A law degree allows you to practice any kind of law. Your finance background may help a little if you choose to go into tax law or corporate law, but generally your undergrad degree does not matter at all. The one exception is IP, where having some sort of science background is essential. Many many people end up practicing tax and corporate law with no business or science background outside of law school, and many people with that background go into entirely different practice areas.
