More to the story on my roommate?

Legally you're still on the lease and equally liable for the full rent. You both agreed to that when you signed the lease. The landlord doesn't care who pays him as long as he gets all the rent. If he doesn't get it, then he will likely start eviction proceedings against both of you. When he wins this will go on your record and make it difficult to get another place to live.

So this makes the issue between you and your ex. Get yourself a new place to live before an eviction shows on your record. Stop paying any rent. Let your roommate look like a fool trying to collect from you. Oh, and if your lease is close to being over make sure you put in a 30 day notice. When that lease does expire it turns month to month with your name on it which you obviously don't want.
