My Bro Shipped His Car From Hawaii To Washington State. Do I Need To Change My License Plate If I Am Going To Study Here

Postby botan » Tue Jan 21, 2014 9:56 am

My brother bought his car in Hawaii about 4 years ago, since he is leaving the State and now I'm studying in Washington, he shipped his car to WA and gave it to me. Now, there are few problems(BTW, I'm an international student):1. Can I keep my Hawaii's registration and license plate?2. Do I need to switch my Hawaii license to Washington State license?Thank you!

If you are not gainfully employed outside of the school, you are not considered a resident. You are not legally a resident of the stat so you don't have to switch.  You do, however, have to have proof of insurance coverage.   If you want more confirmation, you can call the county tag office and ask them this question.

supposed to get a state driver's license within 45 - 60 days.  To the best of my knowledge, only military people are exempt from these regulatons.  You should check with the state's DMV.
