My Labrador/Chow Chow mix is very stubborn and has problems?

Postby arber47 » Tue Jul 31, 2012 10:22 pm

Ok so for starters hes a 6 month old puppy and he does not listen... At first we gave him treats for basic commands like sit and stay but we tried to ease giving them to him to make sure that he doesnt think that if he does them he will always get a treat. So that didnt work because he wont listen when you call him he just goes on like you dont exist and food only makes him listen. He is unneutered and i feel like he thinks he is dominant in my house which isnt the case and im waiting for one of my parents to pay for him to get neutered. If you have food he jumps up and steals it if he can or he will follow you everywhere you go. He doesnt go in his crate by command either you have to put a treat in there and sometimes even that desnt work or we have to push him in there if hes close enough. We try making trails in there but hes too smart he goes all the way up to the door then jumps back. He attacks me and my siblings for no reason and he wags his tail while doing it which i think he thinks hes playing and its not ok ... We have tried the yelping thing when he does it and we have tried the grab by the scruff method but none of it works he just gets more worked up and i have to pin him to the floor to get him to stop. He is potty trained and sits by the door when he needs to go use the bathroom which is good enough. Around visitors or strangers he starts jumping on them or trying to attack them which i strongly believe is out of excitement again because he wags his tail while doing it but it is not acceptable. He cant play with other dogs because he always tries to attack them. He takes peoples things and runs with it and destroys it. He took my glasses and got deep scratch marks in them. He has gotten worse and has gotten to the point where he started jumping on us when we have food to give to him or attacks us. When we give him dinner we make him sit for it and sometimes he doesnt listen. We went on a cruise and my mom gave him to a coworker to look after him for a week last week and he bit her twice and her husband three times. He got worse after he came back from there house. She said she was going to spoil him even though she was capable of training him. We put him in his crate to sleep but he barks for about half the night continuously so we put him outside then we decided to put him in the laundry room and it has worked out a little but now we put him in his cage in the laundry room . A neighbor said to not feed him for a little while and then he will start to listen and he did the same to his dog and his dog is absolutely perfect but im not sure if we should do that to him. I feel horrible because my mom hits him to get him to do the commands like sit and he gets scared and then gets aggressive but never attacks her. He has most of his shots but he needs one more set and he will be done with that . He misbehaves at the vet and refuses to do anything and wont cooperate which is embarassing. No tip online has helped much. The vet told my mom to get him some obedience class to get him trained but she has yet to do that and when he does bad stuff she gets angry and i think she cant be since she wont start his training which we are capable of affording. He is soooo sweet when hes not doinng any of that or he is just sleeping . I have no idea what to do and i am at my ends. I told my mom and siblings who are trying to vote him out the house but thats not fair because he never had proper training and was not neutered and i want him to have another chance. Also my mom believes we should look it up on the internet on how to train him which again doesnt work. He is a great guard dog and i know he loves us all but he cant keep acting like that. Petsmart, Humane Society... I have suggested all those places for his training but no one is taking action. He also has a rash in parts of his body but its the worst on his chin and he has had it for a few weeks and he keeps scratching those places. we are waiting for his last vet visit which is this week to talk about it. We have never cleaned his ear since we got him be because we dont know how. He spazzes out on the floor aftef we feed him and starts pawing at his face and stretches and rolls around on the floor. He also has had red eyes for a while too. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

My Labrador/Chow Chow mix is very stubborn and has problems?

First take the dog to obedience classes so they can teach you how to train your dog. Without professional help this dog will only get worse. Any dog is only as good as the training received. If you don't know how to train, he can not learn.
Second, get him neutered. For many reasons.
Third, go to a book store or library and get some books on training dogs. Again, you have to know what you are doing. Go to websites like ehow.com, they have great tips.
Lastly go to this site http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/dogsectionbasement/ there are several articles that may help you. You will have to sign up for membership but that is no problem. I will approve your membership then just click on "files" and pick the articles you are interested in.

Google NILIF and immediately implement.
Neuter now - it can only help.
Get your insurance policy updated, because you'll need it when this dog bites.

You have a dangerous situation. The dog -and your family- need professional help. At 6 months he is an adolescent jerk. At one year he will be a menace.

BLOODY HELL! You poor thing. Right first where do you live? Are in England if you are you need to get this dog out for some training. The main reason for all this behaviours is lack of exercise and also lack of knowledge on how to be around dogs in the home. A good dog rainer will be able to help you but I cannot stress that this dog needs to be exhausted most days om the walk. If you cant walk him then take him out on the bike and good dog trainer can show you how to do this. DEFO get him back to the vets he might have mange or mites or fleas some which humans can catch so you dont want that. DEFO get him neutered this will help in his frustration for wanting sex and begin dominant but it is not a substitute for dog training. When you get the hang ot it it is easy. Have you got sky or freeview? See if you can find on tv any reruns of 'Victoria stillwell its me or the dog' or the dog whisperer with Cesar milan. If you have not got any of these things then look them up on youtube they have wonderful free snippets you can learn from your dog for free. If your parents will still not take responsibility for your dog threaten to call the Rspca or Take him to a blue cross animal hospital where you dint have to pay for treatment. Good luck xx

There are so many things wrong with this picture that it's hard to sort out how to help you. First of all you need to get rid of that old "dominance" theory. It's been debunked for a long time now with every professional trainer that I know, including the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior which issued a position statement warning members vets not to refer to trainers that use that method of training as it was creating too many aggressive dogs. (Too bad Cesar did read that)
Before you do anymore work with this dog, you need to work on getting his attention and teaching him a reliable "come" command.......this way.....http://www.dogtrainingbasics.com/come.html
You can use treats or not, but if you decide to continue with the treats you do not stop until the dog is reliable. When fading the food it is done in increments of 1, then every other time, then every 2nd time, then every 1st time, then 3rd etc. The dog is supposed to never be sure when or if he will get a treat. This makes him work harder at pleasing you. No good obedience trainer will ever completely stop using treats.
You need some serious training help here, and the training you get from Petco or Petsmart is simple pet training......you are way past being able to control your dog with that kind of trainer.
Look for your local affiliated AKC club here; http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/training_clubs/
They have professional trainers and are much less expensive than Petco or Petsmart.
In your situation, do not hire a professional trainer to do this for you, you need to learn how to control the dog yourself. Many times a hired trainer can get the dog to perform well for them, but after a few weeks back home, the dog reverts back to its' old self, which actually negates the training you paid all that money for.
If you can't afford any training help, then use these two sites to fix the problems you have, making sure not to try to do too much too soon. Concentrate on one thing at a time or your dog is very apt to "turn you off".......which you have already seen. This dog is not stubborn it is simply confused.....that's what you need to fix.

My Labrador/Chow Chow mix is very stubborn and has problems?

He really should be neutered and some places even will do it for free. The biting thing is because he has no proper socialization and is bored. Labradors are especially energetic and need at least 1 walk everyday, more will be better. You can invest in a water bottle and every time he bites you spray him but labs sometimes like being sprayed so you could take a tin can fill it with pennies and when he does something bad you shake it and it should be very loud and he should stop.

You really should look into obedience class because it worked wonders for my dog. I took my pit bull mix puppy to Petco for training when she was 4 months and she went through all the training courses they had there. You also can ask questions about any problems you are having at home with your dog and the trainer can give you tips about what to do. the classes cost around $100 but it comes with 6 free social classes where for an hour all the puppies play together.

About the rash and scratching and red eyes sounds a lot like allergies. My puppy had the same thing plus some gunk in her eyes and the vet told us it was allergies and he gave us medicine for it and she is fine now. When you go to the vet again just ask about it and they should know. With my dog and his ears I bought ear cleaning pads from the pet store and all you do is clean under the ear flap but never go deep into his ear canal because you can really irritate it. You can also take a cotton swab and put some baby oil on it and clean the ear, it softens the ear wax so it comes off easier.

If you are putting him in the crate at night and he cry's you just need to ignore it because after awhile he will just be quiet and sleep, it could take a while for him to stop but you just really need to be consistent. Puppies need a lot of work so don't give up and really try the training.
