My son smokes marijuana?

Postby yehudi » Wed Jul 11, 2012 7:46 pm

Fist off, my son is not a slacker or looser. He has a part time job, gets good grades in school, plays football, and has a boyfriend(he's gay). The only problem is that he smokes marijuana everyday.

A few weeks ago, I noticed a clicking noise coming from his bathroom while he was taking a shower. The next day, after hearing the noise, I realized it was a lighter. After he was done with his shower, I opened up a cupboard in his bathroom to find a small box. After opening this box, I found:
-Lighters
-twine (not sure what he uses that for).
-some marijuana
-a pipe
I soon noticed that he smokes everyday.
I quickly closed the box so I could think more about it. As I said above, he is not a loser, and his use of marijuana does not affect the rest of his life. He is very good kid, and has never been in any major trouble with his school or the law. Also, I know about the facts behind the drug, and I understand fully that marijuana isn't that dangerous. Oh yeah, he is 16.

Should I just continue to act like I don't know about his drug use? Or should I do something. Help?

As long as it doesn't start affecting the other parts of his life, it affects people different ways from long term regular use.
You sound like a cool parent perhaps talk to him about it, say you smelt it or something.
Maybe the twine is for cleaning the pipe.

The twine is lit so you can save lighter fluid. It's sort of like a fuse you can reuse over and over.

You know it's difficult. I'm happy you took a very open minded approach to this instead of just screaming your lungs out at him and demanding silly answers (when anyone doing a drug is doing it for some perspective altering) but what you should ask is how to introduce the fact that you know. I think you should go at it like this. See any drug we consume will alter the mind in some way. And you truly don't want to see your son do bad in school or in any of his normal school activities. I think you should try to do more activities with him. Just go on a hike or something which will require him to not smoke. Pressure him into doing something which he will feel uncomfortable if he is high at the moment. Now you may be thinking this sounds like a bad idea but all I'm suggesting is actually using a little peer pressure (strange idea) to make him not use the drugs.

Marijuana in itself might not be bad, but it's also considered a gate way drug. If you pretend you don't know he's doing it and don't talk to him about it then what happens if he starts doing stuff that is dangerous? And if he is caught doing marijuana he could get into a lot of trouble. If you are ok with him doing it then it's still something I would talk to him about. Let him know what you are and are not ok with. Let him know you don't think he's a bad kid but you are concerned. Make sure he's not doing or thinking about doing anything that can harm him. Hope this helps.

I would tell him you know about it and as long as he keeps is life together, ie he doesn't drop out and start hustling for rocks in the bus station, it's no big deal.

Just talk to him about it. Calmly and be understanding. Just let him know that you know about it, but that it's not acceptable to keep weed in your house. That is a felony on your part to allow marijuana in your home! There's no way you can stop him from smoking, but just tell him that it's not allowed in the house. Being understanding doesn't mean you have to be an enabler.
