Neighbours have moved house and left their cat, what can i do?!?

Postby arrigo » Fri May 11, 2012 11:31 am

Basically a married couple that lived on the ground floor have a cat which is always sat outside their porch or roaming around the communal garden. I saw the cat just this evening sat meowing outside their door. Nothing out the ordinary I thought until my wife later mentioned that a removal lorry had been in attendance and they'd actually moved out yesterday! We live in MOD housing and the original standard issue curtains are up in the kitchen, so they've definitely shifted. Normal MOD policy is no pets in properties with no garden. As they have no children they will only be entitled to a 1 bed flat, so my guess is that they have moved area for a new posting, and they aren't allowed a pet so they've just left it. You just confirm in writing that the owt has been re-housed.
Sorry but I'm not interested to hear if this is the right thing to do or, whether you like cats or not. I would really appreciate some advice in who I should contact to get help for the now homeless cat. Local council, RSPCA..?

Many Thanks

The RSPCA or The Cat Protection League should be able to advise you.
Don't let him starve, put something out for him.

RSPCA first, if they aren't interested then the dog warden. I know its a cat, but I dont think they have a cat warden lol. The police wont be interested. You could use google to see if there is a local cat rescue too.

The local council is only obliged to find homes for homeless people, not cats. I would ring the RSPCA. Cat Welfare Trust, Cats Protection Legue, PDSA or any of the other animal rescue charities in your area. They will collect the cat and look after it until it is rehomed.

You need to call the RSPCA immediately. It is a criminal offence leaving an animal locked inside when you have vacated the property and they should be charged with animal neglect. The poor cat wouldn't have a chance if you didn't notice it still there.

Do you happen to know where they might have moved?....contact info? Perhaps they were looking for the cat when they were packing and ready to leave, and it was nowhere to be found, so they left! If you can't take the cat in yourself (which it doesn't sound like you can), then you might consider calling your local animal shelter or even posting the cat (with a small adoption fee) on Craig's List? Good luck fnding this kitty a new home!

You should definitely tell the landlords/apartment managers first and confirm that they are in fact gone. Also, they might teach those people a lesson and not give them a good reference in the future. Plus, they might be the ones who will want to deal with it a certain way. If you are left to do the work, call the SPCA. You can pick up the cat and bring it to a shelter, or call them for a pickup. If they will pick it up and you can have pets inside, take it inside until they can pick it up. If not, try to keep an eye on it until they come to pick it up. They might ask for the old owner's names, so try to get that on hand before they come.

go get a little box of cat food or something?,and call the RSPCA or the cat protection ledge and they should help you out, maybe you take it in but im not sure if you have to go through things because it was not your cat in the first place.
