On A Vpn Connection, Does All Traffic Go Thru The Vpn?

If I am making use of my house cable broadband connection and I log into my perform VPN, can my perform VPN see all of the web visitors passing by means of my Web connection? Or only the perform-related site visitors?

Depends... Depends if you have checked on "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network"... if it is on, all traffic goes through the VPN.  Otherwise, only traffic to and from the office network use the VPN.  IF you are using a Windows built-in VPN connection, say so in the discussions(and send me a note) and I'll post some screen captures on where this setting is. The answer to this is usually yes.  If you're using Windows(PPTP), all traffic will be routed through the VPN by default.  Your computer becomes literally a part of your office network just like you were at work. If you don't want that, going to the advanced TCP/IP properties and disabling Use Default Gateway on Remote Network will change the routing of your internet traffic.  You'll still be able to access your office network, but then internet traffic will go to your network card's default gateway locally(just like you were not connected to the VPN). For other VPN clients or standalone VPN devices the answer may differ.  There are more flavors of VPN than there are Baskin Robbins, so the answer is usually "it depends" :).

It Depends... I know you didn't want to hear this but it really does depend on the VPN software being used.   The better VPN software today, routes your traffic in the appropriate direction. For example, if you are going to a website outside your company(internet) then it would not pass thru your company. Only INTRAnet traffic would go thru your company(since thats where those websites are).   In the prior version of the VPN software that my company was using, all traffice passed thru the company. There's a good chance everything does pass through the VPN when connected. It really depends on how the VPN is configured on your end, and without more information I couldn't tell you for certain.  My guess would be that given a standard default configuration that yes, all the traffic would be passing through the VPN when you are connected.   Hope that helps! knowware 72 months ago Please sign in to give a compliment.
